Anti-Africa Bias: Does Presumption of Risk Colour Investment
July 22, 2020, 1300 BST | OnlineArgentina, the world’s most notorious serial defaulter, was able to borrow from international investors with no repayment required for a century. Three years on, that bond is worth a fraction of its issue price after the country’s ninth default. By contrast, oil-rich Angola, which hasn’t defaulted since the end of its civil war in 2002, was charged a higher rate for its shorter-dated debt last year. It’s just one example of the added risk presumed by investors that penalises African governments and companies with higher borrowing rates. And, despite the continent’s relatively exemplary record in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic, presumed risk of default is also the lens through which creditors will be entering talks on debt relief.
In the latest in our series of online discussions, we probe the risk bias against Africa and ask the inevitable question: is prejudice infecting capital markets?
Leading our discussing is an eminent panel of speakers:
Kojo Annan, Managing Partner of Vector Global and son of Kofi Annan
Christophe Charlier, ex-Chair of Renaissance Capital
Fulu Mudau, fixed income & currencies, Deutsche Bank
Michael Nderitu, Chief Risk Officer, AZAOpening remarks & moderator: Boason Omofaye, New Markets Media & Intelligence

Africa's Debt: Freeze, Forgive or Forget?
24 June 2020, 13:00 BST | OnlineWhat official debt relief means for companies, currencies, economies – and moral hazard
Most of Africa spends more on servicing debt to wealthy countries and investors than on healthcare. Few would argue such imbalances demand radical change. But with some rich-nation and African lawmakers agitating for “extensive debt forgiveness,” many worry about unintended consequences – not least the impact on Africa’s future access to global capital markets, rewarding fiscal largesse and sending a green light to state capture and corruption.
So, what is the solution? What are the lessons from relief provided after the global financial crisis and the HIPC initiative? What safety nets and assurances are necessary for debt relief to bring long-term benefits? What action beyond debt relief would best serve Africa in its battles against Covid-19 and unprecedented economic threats? And how does China – accounting for more than a third of African debt – factor in all of this?
Speakers
- Elizabeth Rossiello, Founder & CEO, AZA
- Joseph Rohm, Managing Director and Fund Manager, Adventis
- Von Kemedi, Co-Founder & Managing Director, Alluvial Agriculture
Closing remarks: His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II (former Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria)
