Where is the greatest natural concentration of wealth?

Africa holds around 30% of the world’s known mineral reserves – more than any other continent - from diamonds and gold to oil and gas.

It’s also the most important region for the components of new technology: copper, cobalt and graphite. For example, the Democratic Republic of Congo is the world’s largest source of cobalt and one of the biggest copper producers.

60% of the world’s arable land is in Africa.

In terms of human capital, Africa is the only continent where the working-age population is growing as a proportion of total.

We believe such resources and human capital must ultimately be reflected in the growth of Africa's economies. New Markets Media & Intelligence helps to drive responsible investment to critical resources in Africa and across global frontier and emerging markets through engagement at our events and in media.

Such events include our EMEA Metals & Mining Conference co-hosted with the London Stock Exchange, which focused discussion on how to achieve sustainability and ESG in the industry. Another recent event probed the impact of coronavirus lockdowns in disrupting the resource supply chain.

Based on our work with some of the biggest investors and companies in establishing ESG, impact and responsible investment principles, New Markets' CEO Gavin Serkin discussed critical steps to match a company’s credentials with ESG expectations at Minex Europe 2020.
